BIG Changes are Coming

August 17th, 2007 | by GTD Wannabe |

I’ve decided to make the BIG move. I’m going to move this blog over to WordPress. It’s a concept that I’ve been toying with for months. Basically, I was scared off by the concept of having to figure out how to install it.

Turns out, my web host, GoDaddy, offers an easy installation of WordPress. The only thing holding me back was the fact that you have to select a “linux” host when you buy your hosting package. I had selected a “windows” host, but that was actually really easy to fix. (i.e., click a button, a day later, it’s fixed. Pure magic!)

Now, I’m just playing with WordPress, getting used to it. You may notice some weirdness with the feed. My goal is to keep my Feedburner feed, so anybody already subscribed to http://feeds.feedburner.com/GtdWannabe should have no trouble. Anyone using any other feed should stop immediately ;)

The switch isn’t complete yet – hence this post is still in Blogger. I’m also in the process of trying to import my old posts from Blogger into WordPress. It’s not as easy as it should be. So, we’ll see. I have 348 posts in Blogger (doesn’t seem like that many, does it?) but if they don’t all come over, or if they come over, but are missing images, I’m not sure what I’ll do.

What else? Oh, I’m also going to kill off any other pages I’ve got listed over at GTDWannabe.com. I hate the layout I have there, and really, there’s no need for me to keep static pages. I’m not updating them anyway. So, I’m going to keep everything in the blog. (It seems I can create stand-alone pages in the blog too, so I’ll use that for weird things.) This means that the EverNote pages and the EverNote Template Catalogue are going to disappear. Download now, if you want to capture anything :)

I’ll let you know more later, for instance, the address of the new blog, and the feed, and everything :)

Wish me luck!

I received the following comment over at Blogger re this post:

Geoff R has left a new comment on your post “BIG Changes are Coming”:

Congratulations on moving your blog to wordpress! I am positive you will find it a much more flexible platform.

I am a bit nervous about you using GoDaddy as your host though. They are notorious for being very hard to set up wordpress on. Even after I spent 8 hours troubleshooting to get my installation up, I ended up moving to another host, because GoDaddy doesn’t support some of the plugins I wanted.

If you still have the chance, I HIGHLY recommend you check out A Small Orange hosting. They offer fairly cheap hosting, little downtime, and their support is absolutely amazing! Even if your problem has to do with wordpress and not their hosting, they will answer you in 15 minutes!

The Tiny plan costs $25 a year, and includes 75MB disk space, and 3GB monthly bandwidth. At first I thought this was rediculous, because GoDaddy offers 250gb of bandwidth for only $4! But trust me, the amazing server speed, uptime, and customer support is a worthy trade-off for a bunch of bandwidth that you won’t use. (I haven’t gone over 3GB yet).

Anyways, GoDaddy is a pain, and you will eventually transfer to another hosting service. So if you can’t transfer now, do not pay for more than 1 month at a time.

    Geoff

p.s. ASO has 1-click wordpress installations, and database creation. ASO may seem more expensive, but if you value your time at more than $10/hr, you will save HUNDREDS!

    And now I reply:

@Geoff, Thanks for the feedback. Fortunately, I’ve had nothing but good luck with GoDaddy, and am quite pleased to stay with them. In fact, I found their customer service to be excellent, especially since I wasn’t really sure what I was doing when I set up the hosting package. For instance, when offered the choice between Windows and Linux for my host, I chose Windows, because, what do I know? When I decided to try out WordPress, I discovered that GoDaddy offered easy installation, but it had to be on a Linux host. The customer support was very good at walking me through what I had to do to change host types (very easy, by the way), and since then, I’ve been just motoring.

True, I think I was having some problems importing from Blogger, but there was a workaround that turned about to be very easy. When it came to installing WP itself, that went extremely well. I think the hardest part was figuring what theme I wanted to use, and how to tweak it to my satisfaction. (The new widgets are amazing!) As for plugins, since I’m so new to this, there’s nothing on my “must have” list, so that’s not a problem either.

So, I’m very happy. But it’s nice to hear about another great provider, just in case… :)

I couldn’t understand some parts of this article BIG Changes are Coming, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.
