Looking for the EverNote Template Editor
April 9th, 2008 | by GTD Wannabe |Can’t find the template editor over at the main EverNote site? That’s because it’s been removed. Why? Probably because they’re focusing so hard on the new Evernote 3 beta, which doesn’t support templates. Please, don’t ask – it’s just too painful to talk about.
Anyway, some of us are still using 2.2, and some of us still want to modify templates. Not me, I’m using the ones that I’ve already got and that’s it. But there are some brave souls out there that want to play with templates.
So, I’m uploading the template editor for EverNote 2.2. This is the copy that I downloaded way long ago. Use at your own risk. No support is provided for it, or for templates created by it, either here or over at EverNote. You’ve been warned.
EverNote Template Editor – 2.2 Version
(Note: this is only for Windows – the older 2.2 version of EN only works on Windows. Hence the template editor also only works on Windows.)

You must inform the people that the editor is just for the Windows version!!

I’ve done my fair share of custom templates. I remember back in the day, we were told that more advanced template options would come when the entire template format was re-worked. Well, it has and…. um…. unless the EN folks believe in advanvement through nihlism!
In past posts, I have gotten the impression that you have the ear of at least some folks at EN. Can you please ask them to take a step back and look at the trainwreak they’re making of their product? Some of 3.0 is really good, but without the 2.2 features, it is all so much ho-hum….
BTW, I’ve never posted here before, but just want to say that I always love reading your blog entries!

@TorstenB: Sorry! I guess was kind of assumed in my head – the 2.2 version of EN only worked on Windows. It’s only EN3 that is cross-platform – even though the Mac versions seem to start at 1.x. Too confusing.

@JohnPMP: Yeah, my ear-bending abilities only go so far. A few of us power users have been quite vocal, on phone, in email, in the user forum, all to no avail.
Let’s just say that I think we power users (and by that I mean anyone that really likes automatic categories, templates, category intersection, etc.) are not the demographic that the new EN is targetting. For one thing, I don’t have a camera phone. Also, I’m not much on snapping pictures of wine bottles. Plus, my working db has 7000+ notes. Like I’m going to want to access that on a mobile device, even if I had a device they supported.
On the plus side, my 2.2 still works, so I’m still happy with my working software :)
Oh, and thanks.

Why I stay with version 2.2? – is because each version degrades somewhat…
The MAIN point here is that the basic evernote concept was so simple and straightforward. The other point is that no matter how simply intuitive you make an application, there will always be some who complain. They will turn simple things into complications because their point of view is questionable. And you see, as of now, you are trying to find notes “blindly” hoping you fall on the right selection – good luck! This isn’t near as efficient as the tape method. I figure that the person who invented the tape display was a genius! Why ruin a good thing…? I think that sometimes developers don’t know what to shut their minds to and what to open their minds to… I think the developers are confused somewhat because they listened to too much crap commentaries… why are we ruining such a good thing…?!! I can’t believe what is going on… and they think “mobility” is the only thing that matters – well, it’s good – no doubt – but what if you don’t need the mobility features…? Not everyone is on the run with their notes. All the emphasis is on that – but I personally don’t need it – I need a notes application and that’s what I have in 2.2
According to reports, 3.5 is sluggish – well, apparently they “claimed” it would be faster, and now we see the contrary. So in reality, this new method does not surpass the tape method. The evidence is there. It’s no surprise.
Those who claimed 2.2 had some confusing issues – well – I think they didn’t have the correct mindset. If simple things confuse you, then something is wrong with your point-of-view… not the application…
I will not use version 3… I lost too much from version 2.2 – I don’t see the gain… I could put a long list here of the things that got trimmed out – things I needed badly – things I waited so patiently to obtain…
And YES – version 2.2 runs very well for me!
